She-ep

Fiona Robertson's film 'She ep' is an exploration of the way in which personal & collective memory both enables & frustrates our desire for truthful expression in a 'disenchanted' contemporarity that is nevertheless saturated with symbolic orders both relict & novel. Through the surreal, deeply-rooted psycho-cultural imaginary of nursery rhymes and fairy tales, Robertson explores the limits of expression & articulated selfhood in the post-modern, post-industrial fragmentation of psychological & physical geographies. The film protagonist, the eponymous 'She ep'- wanders through a liminal, derelict space; the grounds of an abandoned school, scrub forest near modern apartment buildings, a disused & overgrown football field. There, unreal characters and structures congregate, caught between worlds - the subconscious and the conscious, the contemporary and the archaic, the fictional and the real. Mixing elements from medieval mummer's shows, brechtian drama & the 'anti-narratives' of traditional nursery rhymes, 'She ep' approaches 'classic' questions of expression - gender, selfhood, narration and the 'real' from the points at which those questions begin to collapse under their own weight.
