A Hole in Our Flag, a Hole in Our Heart: The Realpolitik of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution

A 13-year old child of a refugee sets out to uncover the reasons behind her great-grandparents' anti-Semitic and anticommunist hatred that has spanned six decades, and learns the reason behind her mother's arrival to America through this historic documentary about the brutal suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The uprise claimed the lives of thousands of young Hungarians, including her mother's great-grandfather and two uncles. After her family lost everything they worked hard for through generations, paying the ultimate price on the altar of freedom proved to be too much for this family to forgive, blaming the United Nations and the US for not intervening despite their empty propaganda promises of help. The documentary takes an in-depth look at the reasons why communism failed in Hungary and explains the realpolitik among the superpowers and the UN. Ultimately, this realpolitik resulted in a subtle collusion between the superpowers that only seemed sinister on the surface, as it ended up being the only solution for avoiding a third world war. When history appeared to repeat itself 33 years later, the family decided to send their daughter to the very nation that betrayed them, giving the author an unbiased perspective to view the events from both sides. The documentary highlights not just the plight of a nation but the reality of its deep-rooted resentment that survived multiple generations, until - ironically, -- the last generation arrived to America.
