Chav

Chav is a Student film made under the production of Film and Television Institute of India.The literal translation of Chav, a Marathi language word in English language is TASTE. The film is the journey of Gulab who is finding a match for herself to get married to. She runs a small kitchen in the village where she cooks appetizing Mutton-Bhakri (flat bread).The biggest hurdle in her journey to get married is her dark complexion and growing age.She's determined to realize her dream and leaves no stone unturned. Gulab has pin down her hopes on Sarla who runs a marriage bureau in the village.But Sarla has given up on any remote possibility of Gulab getting married.Food is often understood as a channel for social connection across globe and the same thought has been used to connect unknown people in Chav. The idea germinated from personal experiences during my growing up years in a small village called Owali in Maharashtra-India.The overall tone and treatment of the film is light but it does touch upon issues that are universal and portrayed through a small setting. It does question patriarchy in the Indian society (reference last scene in the film) in a very subtle way. Majority characters in the film are females.They take charge of their lives. The language spoken in the film Is a dialect called Agri which is derived from Marathi language.The costume and Art represent the flamboyance with which the Agri community lives in their own financial capacity.
