Legacies
The birthplace of Black Capitalism is a historical black neighborhood in Richmond,Virginia called Jackson Ward. You will be taken on a journey from the beginning of the neighborhood to present day. Legends like Ella Fitzgerald played at the Hippodrome Theater. Maggie Walker who was the first female bank president chartered a bank called , 'The St Luke Penny Saving Bank'. The bank was located in the Jackson Ward neighborhood. Jackson Ward was home to many black owned businesses like barbershops, grocery stores, and a insurance company called Southern Aid The Construction of Interstate I-95 destroyed a lot of the neighborhood and but it did not destroy the spirit of the neighborhood. The Black History Museum and the Elgba Society have done a good job preserving the history and culture of the neighborhood. Today the Two Street Festival celebrates the history and culture of the neighborhood.
